A festival shaped by the seasons
Udhouli and Ubhouli are important seasonal observances among Kirat communities. They connect agriculture, migration, gratitude to nature and remembrance of ancestors. Names, dates and rituals can vary by place and community, while the idea of living in balance with nature remains central.
Sakela and participation
Sakela dance is often performed in a circle to the rhythm of drums and cymbals. Its movements can evoke farming, birds, animals and everyday work. It is more than a performance: it is also an open classroom where younger people encounter language, rhythm, relationships and community memory.
Keeping the tradition alive
Photographs and recordings should respect the dignity of rituals and the consent of participants. Asking elders about meaning, writing local names accurately and documenting songs in their original languages are practical ways to support continuity.
